چکیده

1Department of Animal Sciences, NDSU The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of corn dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) supplementation to beef cows during late gestation on maintenance of body condition and weight, voluntary feed intake behavior, and factors affecting milk and milk nutrients for the calf. Results indicate supplementation offers advantages to the cow and calf, which in turn offers potential economic advantages to the cow-calf producer.

Supplementation of corn dried distillers grains plus solubles to gestating beef cows fed low-quality forage: I. Altered intake behavior, body condition, and reproduction.

To investigate the effects of corn dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) supplementation to cows fed corn stover and silage during late gestation, 27 multiparous beef cows (674 ± 17 kg; BCS, 5.6 ± 0.1) were divided randomly into 2 pens equipped with electronic feeders. For 10 wk, both groups were fed the basal diet for ad libitum intake while 1 group was supplemented (SUP; = 12) with DDG...

Late gestation supplementation of beef cows differing in body condition score: effects on cow and calf performance.

A 2-yr study utilizing 120 mature, crossbred (Angus × Herford) cows/year, evaluated the influence of cow BCS and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) supplementation during late gestation on cow performance and productivity of subsequent offspring. Treatments were arranged as a 2×2 factorial in a randomized complete block design with 2 BCS and with or without DDGS supplementation. Cows ...

Effects of Altering Supplementation Frequency During the Pre-Partum Period of Beef Cows Grazing Dormant Native Range

Spring-calving beef cattle that are grazing low-quality (< 7% crude protein) dormant forage typically are unable to meet their maintenance requirements for protein. Providing a protein supplement (> 30% crude protein) is recommended to decrease losses of body weight and body condition. Nutrient supplementation when forage quality is poor or limited is one of the largest expenditures for forage-...

2011 Alpharma Beef Cattle Nutrition Symposium:enhancing beef production efficiency with new knowledge and technologies: building the bridges for future collaboration.

The beef cattle industry relies on the utilization of high forage diets to maintain the cow herd, develop replacement females, and stocker operations. Forage quantity and quality fluctuate with season and environmental conditions. Depending on the class and physiological state of the animal, a grazed forage diet may not always meet nutritional requirements resulting in low ADG or weight loss if...

Limit-feeding corn as an alternative to hay for gestating beef cows.

Three experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of limit-feeding corn-based diets as an alternative to hay for beef cows in gestation and early lactation. Seventy or 71 mature, pregnant Simmental crossbred cows (average weight = 589 +/- 10 kg) were used in each trial. Each of 29 or 30 cows was fed approximately 5 kg of whole shelled corn, 1.2 kg of a pelletted supplement, and 1 kg of...
